Hi from New York/USA

Hi all, been reading on here for more than a month and Dave finally let me in so I can post. I'm 38, 6'0", athletic, in New York/Westchester, and go to beaches along the Sound. After too long (since high school) of being too scared to wear swim briefs, I finally said f*k it and told my wife I was wearing them this summer...and I did. She initially said "absolutely not" and she wouldn't go to the beach with me ("What would people think?" "What about the kids?" yadda yadda). I got mostly dark colors of the solid Meridian line from Parke&Ronen, like my avatar pic, which are pretty conservative as far as swim briefs go and after seeing me in them, she went to the beach with me/kids, though I still think she prefers shorts. Oh well, I don't care, since I am in shape and like them way too much for all the reasons you guys know. Anyways, I was on the beach at least a couple dozen times this summer with no issues, no comments (to my face), though lots of looks and lots of fear internally (though I tried to project confidence). There are generally no others in speedos except the occasional older gentleman. But women wear what they want, which is getting skimpier each year, so I am wearing what I want. Any other NY/lowerCT guys here? Anyways, thanks for reading and see you around.

Hey there, ToTheMax, and welcome to the group. I'm in NYC, and it sounds like you're north of the city. I'm not familiar with any super speedo friendly beaches up there, but I guess I haven't been on the lookout for them. I frequent Jacob Riis Beach near the Rockaways. There's a section of the beach that is way more free living (speedos, topless, etc), and it's a great vibe.

At any rate, I wear speedos wherever I go, but it's more comfortable obviously at certain beaches than others.

Thanks, and yes, North of the city. I would love to have a beach like Jacob Riis near us, but unfortunately there’s not. Ah well, guess I just have to deal with the uncomfortable looks. I’m not wearing any super scandalous ones anyways and no VPL with the dark colors on a thicker suit (I actually love the P&R Meridians, though wait for sales!), as I have my boys (under 10) with me most of the time. I’m just happy to finally be wearing a comfortable suit. Others may, or not, eventually come around to embracing it. Cheers! -Max

Jacob Riis is still pretty family friendly, but it's definitely a hike from where you are. I feel you, though, as I'm usually the only one in a speedo on the beach. My husband won't wear them, but I continue to try to get him to. My suits are also on the less scandalous side (I love Marcuse), so that helps too.

Welcome to the Board!

I went to Riis Park since the 1960's, wearing some of the smallest flat-front suits and slingshot thongs. The abandoned old-age home at Bay 1 was torn down this year. This year the crowd seems different and I rarely go there any more.

Welcome to the board! It is always good to have another Brother In Briefs on board!

Great on you for finally working towards pushing your concerns about what others think to the side and choosing what you are comfortable wearing! Who knows, it is entirely likely that you have helped inspire some chap who wants to wear swim briefs, but is afraid to wear swim briefs for whatever reason. Hopefully next season and the subsequent seasons more guys start choosing swim briefs.

Keep projecting that confidence and rock those suits!

Welcome to the board. My other half has given up trying to make me give up my speedos, as she knows she’s on a looser. Glad you’ve made the jump.

Welcome to the forum.
Great to know that you went ahead with that goal. And you are right, projecting confidence is really important.
