Joined a YMCA Gym

Post by Texas_swimmer » Wed Jul 18, 2018 11:35 am

Hey guys I joined a YMCA gym near my house because its closer than my old gym, its a lot cleaner and not as expensive. I know its a christian and conservative based gym. I am wanting to swim laps at the pool. I usually don't worry about wearing what I want to swim in but I want to be considerate of others. The pool is a mix of 3 lanes for lap swimming connected to a recreational part. When I visited I noticed a lot of younger kids (under the ages of 13-14?) swimming and having a good time.

I guess what I'm getting at is I'm nervous to wear my swim briefs to swim in. Ironic considering my signature says not to worry about what others think.

I just don't want a parent getting upset that their kid saw a guy in a speedo. I also don't want to be approached and asked to change into something more appropriate like what happened in the past.

So anyone swim in swim briefs at the Y?

Sorry for the silly thread but I just wanted to ask.

I had the same concern when I joined my current athletic club. I wore briefs a few times but was afraid I might be asked to put on something else. Therefore I decided to ask the aquatics director if it was okay to wear one. I was wearing one at the time I was talking to her. She said it was fine. What they don’t like is wearing street clothes or gym clothes in the pool. She added, besides, you look good in them.

Anyway, if I were you I’d ask management for their okay. Once you have that then it doesn’t matter that much what others think because if they complain to the management you already have them on your side.

I have been swimming at a Y for over a year. I only ever wear a swim brief. Never a comment or a problem. There are almost always kids in the recreational section & parents just sitting around. I come out of the locker room in my brief & carrying my goggles. I don't even bother bringing a towel on deck...

Agree with Electric2010, same experience at my YMCA. Wish there were more swim briefs, but not an issue to wear one.

Not a Y but I swim at a public pool that has lanes with kids and parents in the adjoining part of the pool and and a large glass window through to the reception area. Never had any problem.

An ordinary speedo should be fine - you're a swimmer and speedos are designed for just that, swimming.

Normally I swim at a college pool, discount for alumni, $50 a year can't beat it. Always wore speedos there, never any issue.

They closed that pool for renovations for the summer so I joined the local YMCA at least for a few months. I'm the only guy I've seen in a speedo but haven't had any issues. One other regular wears a jammer, one guy in a square cut. Everyone else is in board shorts but nobody's said anything to me and I haven't got any dirty looks.

I think the "C" in YMCA is a loose principle, not necessarily a strict code to which they adhere.

I live in a large enough city with multiple YMCA locations and I've swum in nearly all of them in a brief and never had any issues. Depending on the location, I'm often the only one in a brief, but there's one where at least half of the male lap swimmers are in briefs or square cuts- not sure why it's more popular with us.

I say go for it.

I used to belong to the Y in Indianapolis a few years ago and only ever saw one guy in a speedo. I knew a few other guys that would swim in them at other branches throughout the city. I swim at LA Fitness now and have seen a few other guys swim in speedos or at least relax in the hot tub in them. LA Fitness doesn’t have lifeguards, so nobody can really judge you on your attire. Just wear what feels comfortable to you. Speedos offer more freedom and movement and easier to get off after swimming, compared to how jammers hug the legs.

I must be lucky the YMCA Aquatic center here in Orlando is huge and most guys, of all ages, are in speedos. When I joined I was surprised just how many guys wear speedos here. At other pools I was a member of there were a few guy wearing them but most were in jammers or trunks.

How about asking them where it says not to, if confronted about it?

Thanks all I will ask the front desk on their swimsuit policies. I'm sure I'll be fine.

Did you get a response?

Most of the time I've seen a policy posted, all it says is that you're required to wear "appropriate swimwear". It rarely goes into much more detail. As long as you're not wearing a transparent suit, speedos are full coverage and appropriate in any situation.

I belong to an independent gym, but I worked out at a YMCA a few years ago. I never saw any speedos in the pool; the guys all wore modest suits. Ironically, they spent a lot of time naked in the locker room. The same guys that wore jammers and shorts in the pool would spend half an hour or more naked in the hot tub and sauna.

Regular Y swimmer, speedos on adult men are...the minority, but never had a problem. Even rec splashers and kids are less prone to head-turn at a speedo in the past few years. Besides, at least half of the swim-team teenage boys are wearing speedos to practice, the the teenage swimmer girls are wearing one-pieces that are practically thongs these days, so I don't want to hear about speedo inappropriateness.

I’ve bought a day pass to the Y in greater Portland, ME, and in Indianapolis. Neigh one had a problem with a swim brief or jammer. I emailed and specifically asked before I arrived at the Portland Y about briefs and they were 100% ok with it if you were. They were around way before the dork short bs trend and will be here well after it is over.

Just go for it. Speedo briefs are nothing but normal and certainly for lap swimming. I would not ask management if it is alright cause it would imply that you might think there might be something wrong and why should there be? If in doubt where a modest one or short square cut to test the waters lol

I have worn some pretty small swim briefs at the Y, and some swim briefs that become a little see through when wet.

Never has anyone ever said anything to me about swim briefs at the Y. They are absolutely the correct thing to wear when swimming laps.
