Do normal people distinguish between different types of speedos?

Post by 52dno98 » Fri Jul 09, 2021 3:03 pm

Do normal- that is, not obsessed with speedos- people tell a difference when a guy is wearing a more conservative brief- like 3 or 4 inches- versus a 2 or even 1 inch side brief? Or do they just say, "there's a guy in a speedo. Eeeew."?

When I go lap swimming, I often wonder if the other people at the pool notice if I'm wearing something like these:

Versus suits like these... like does that sort of thing even register to them?

Interesting question. I'd guess probably not. Our group here appreciates the fine points. For the average pool goer, they likely all look the same. To me, you look good in both, though the narrow sides definitely have the edge.

I've always wondered that myself. I assume that more "conservative" suits like the first one your are pictured wearing are less conspicuous than the skimpier one in the second picture (which looks fantastic, BTW!). But I think that the general, non speedo obsessed public regard anything tight and thigh barring as a "speedo", and don't differentiate between briefs and square cut suits. I also think that any tight, stretch-lycra type suit tends to emphasize the bulge and bulges are what most people fixate on when they see speedos, so to most, anything small and tight is a speedo.

Real world example: There is a movie called Red Sparrow starring Jennifer Lawrence and Joel Edgerton. In it, there is a scene where they encounter each other at a lap swimming pool. Before I saw the movie, I saw a talk show interview with J-Law where she joked about seeing her co-star Joel E. in his "little speedo" during filming of that scene. So then I looked forward to seeing the scene when I did actually go see the movie in the theater, but what he was wearing was actually a square cut suit, and not even as small as the legendary James Bond blue suit from Casino Royale. My reaction was, "come on J-Law, that's not a speedo!", but to her, I guess a regular square cut is a speedo.

By the way, I do think that "regular" people do notice how much skimpier 1" suits are than 5" ones, and I'm guessing that your awesome second suit would garner a lot more glances than your nice first suit, just because it's more striking.

I too prefer your second suit, but disagree slightly with my friend above - as long as you are decent, ie no clumps of hair showing or a nut popped out, I don't think most people will notice the difference.

Most people are going to equate a speedo with any man wearing a swimsuit that is made of lycra/spandex or similar material. On the rare occasion that I wear a square cut, it's like wearing a regular pair of shorts.
Just a straight guy that enjoys wearing speedos. Life is too short, enjoy wearing what you want.

The mainstream manufacturers (Speedo, Tyr, Arena, etc) have standardized on a 7cm/3in brief with a flat front. No one will think twice about seeing a brief designed for swimming in lap pool. Even the smaller cuts (Speedo Solar, Arena Santamarias) shouldn’t be given much of a side eye. It’s the suits designed to show off your ass, dick, or otherwise trying to be sexy that can be problematic.
