Speedos in Brazilian Television

Brazil is almost a paradise for speedos, especially in the 80s and 90s, when the models were much more tiny and it was normal to see them on TV back then. With the end of federal censorship in October 1988, Brazilian television entered a very liberal phase that lasted until 2000.

The Sunday game show "Domingo Legal" [Cool Sunday] went on the air in 1993 and in its early years had several rather daring competitions. The program is still on the air, but with a very different format. One of the competitions was to catch 10 soaps while someone of the opposite sex tried to stop you from catching them. Believe it or not, it was a program shown on Sunday afternoons [between 12pm and 4pm]. The strangest thing is that many models went to this show to advertise male or female nudity magazines.

Television in Brazil was and still is famous for its exuberant prime-time soap operas. This scene was taken from a 1997 production called "Anjo Mau" [Bad Angel in Portuguese], shown on Brazilian prime access [6:00pm]. The scene consists of a conversation between 3 or 4 women surrounding a handsome actor wearing a speedo in the pool.

In 1993, the now-defunct Manchete Network produced a controversial miniseries about former Brazilian president Fernando Collor de Mello, who had been impeached for corruption the previous year. Unfortunately, the series was not aired because of a libel suit. The scene in which the former president is in the swimming pool with a young man, who is said to be a call boy, hints at possible bisexuality. The two are wearing speedos.

This is one of the oldest records I've found of speedos on Brazilian television. It's from the prime acess telenovela "Canção para Isabel" [ENG: Song for Elizabeth], produced by the now-defunct Tupi Network in 1976. It was the network's penultimate black-and-white program.
