Vintage Speedo's

Post by Cozzy » Sat Jun 30, 2012 3:47 pm

Hello everyone. I was wondering if you could help me out. I have left all my Speedo's at my uni halls and I'm in need of a speedo. However I'm looking for something different.

I was wondering if anyone could offer for sale a vintage pair of Speedo's (or Arena, Adidas, Nike, any old sports' brand, etc.) I want to experience what the fit was like back then, what the fabrics were like, modesty, etc. Looking at some older photo's they didn't accommodate the fit like today (if you know what I mean) and fabric looked either like super stretchy lycra or stiff nylon. Would anyone be willing to sell something like this in M 32-34"?

Alternatively, some of the old tech suits look amazing such as the Arena X-Flat, S2000, suits with a vented butt seam or especially a
Nike Teraz.

NB: What I'm not looking for are Aussiebum or Caussie replicas but rather the genuine article. I also know that a fellow member is having a clear out of tech suit which look awesome but are all 28"!

Thank you!

To parody Oscar Wilde, to lose one Speedo, Sir, may be regarded as a misfortune. To lose more looks like carelessness.

Not to worry, I still have them at my house I just didn't bring any on holiday while I'm at my parents. I could never subject my speedos to such a heinous crime of simply losing it!

I'm reassured.

Hi Cozzy,

Your need of vintage Speedos is noted, and acknowledged. Particularly, if you have lost them. (Silly boy!)

You refer to "super stretchy lycra, or stiff nylon". The original Speedos were neither. Lycra wasn't even around in those days (like, we're talking about from the 1950's, specifically, as I recall, about 1956 (and, I do recall!) As to "stiff nylon", we'll!; and, the original nylon in Speedos was not "stiff" it was about 75 gsm material, which is, in modern terms, very light, and it was also, very soft, and 100% nylon. The later Speedos went on to become about 95 gsm (gsm = grams per square metre), before then acquiring the disease of gaining a component of lycra, and becoming nothing like the original Speedos (not to mention then becoming, in later years, manufactured in China, no inference drawn from that, but that's just what happened to a great Australian product).

My point is, that you are not going to get the original Speedos from Speedo, because they don't do that any more. And Arenas, Adidas and Nike never did. Ergo, it ain't such a bad thing if you go to a "replica", if it replicates the experience of having an "original" nylon Speedo. As to Aussiebum, or Caussie, your choice, but if you are looking for the essence of the original Speedo, that is the choice that you are looking at. Can't (won't) speak re Aussiebum, but Caussie is it's own interpretation of the original Speedo, but it is a Caussie design, which may just suit you. It uses a fabric that is a lightweight 100% nylon, a la the original Speedo, and that is an essential feature of Caussie.

So, replicas aren't that bad, if they go back to the good things that were a feature of the original, and you can't get the original.

Please consider!

All the best,

Caussie

Hi there Causssie

Any news on stock in red? It looks like they've been out of stock for a little while (and they look pretty hot!)

Your suits look great. Is your nylon similar in look and feel to (sorry) Aussiebum or the old Speedos?

True! I should really make do with what I've got already. But to just prove I'm all about speedo diversity, I just got a new pair of white Aussiebums:

and a pair of striped ones too:

Both great suits Budgy. I have a pair of the Loose Freshwaters. But I have a scrawny build instead of a beefy one. You...ummm...fill them out more. They just dont look that great on me and they feel like they want to fall off.

Speaking of red, I think you liked my red Asian Arena brand speeds that I posted here. Like to see you in a pair of those.....

Hello All,

Thankyou for your questions regarding Caussie.

Regarding the progress of the red Caussie, the new "red" is now underway, the fabric has been selected so that it has all the good features of the look and feel of the original speedos, and it's a great shade of red (if you want to be noticed...and you will be). In particular, the fabric is particularly soft so it looks, and feels, good. Not that "goodness" has anything to do with it....

Expect the red to be available within about a month, we are not hurrying, and it may well be worth your wait. Only you can ultimately judge, but I think it will be well sought after. It's how I want it to be, and why the time was taken in getting it right. I'm happy with it!

Obviously, news of its becoming available for sale will be on the website http://www.caussie.com.au and also will be advised through our mailing list of our existing Caussie purchasers.

As to the question of the look and feel of the nylon in our existing maroon, navy blue and black Caussies, all of these fabrics are lightweight 100% nylon similiar to that used in the earlier speedos, and that is the look and feel that we think we have achieved, albeit in its own "Caussie" style. Aussiebum has not been an influence in the design and style of Caussie, just as I suspect that Caussie has not been an influence in their style and designs. If you loved, or missed out on, the earlier speedos, then it's really a matter of your choice as to what is presently available. And, it's a very personal choice. Good luck!

All the best,

Caussie

BRAVO!! So glad to hear that 1. the Caussie's feel is that of the older Speedos (AB never quite got there) and 2. You are old enough or well informed enough to remember the old Speedos!!. Do you have a list of people you will notify when the red becomes available, or will you at least post here?

Now, any chance we will be seeing something like orange or yellow in your future?

Thanks for the questions about Caussie.

News of the arrival of the red Caussies will be emailed to all persons on our mailing list. You can put yourself on this list through (1) a purchase of a Caussie (Much applause!!); or (2) Just by contacting us, and requesting inclusion on the mailing list (muted applause!). Contact@ http://www.caussie.com.au

Red is definitely on its way, and I will also let all of you who haven't yet managed to get yourself on the mailing list, know of its availability by announcement on this site.

Regarding the question of other colours, such as orange, or yellow, well, yes! but probably not as the next colour to be released. But, over to you.....

Please let us know what colours you would like to see in a 100% nylon swimwear brief. It is invaluable feedback, and if you request enough times under a number of different pseudonyms, we may just think that your choice is what the Caussie buying public is clamouring for, and you may just get the colour of your choice.

There will be a release of further colours! Now, you have your chance to influence what those colours should be....

Thanks for your interest, much appreciated.

All the best,

Caussie http://www.caussie.com.au

My request is for a light blue colour. The thing I like about light blue is it compliments skin colour - giving the impression of a better tan

Also I have blue eyes :D

Hi Cossie,

I have been a regular swimmer for a long time. I think wearing speedos has been at least one of my principle motivation. Buying and experimenting with speedos has been great fun and as a result I have a serious collection. I have a pair of XFlat (French rather than *Japanese) I also have an S2000. They might be a size or two smaller than yours but if you would like I would be happy to send them to you. They would be better stretched across you, than sitting in my cupboard collecting dust. Just drop me a line. tightsman@yahoo.com.au

*The Japanese XFlat were the best and sexiest swimwear ever (circa 1998), so small, really fine and a fantastic venting system up the rear, but unfortunately they fell to pieces after being in chlorine, so all I have left are skeletons of 3 pairs.
