Just wanted to say hello

Post by oldspeedo » Tue Oct 06, 2009 4:35 am

Used to love wearing speedos "back in the day". Unfortunately, time, gravity, and too much of the good life have ended those days for now. Maybe when I get back in shape.....

Hello to everyone......love the forum. Wish we would have had something like this back in the 70's......

Justin, speedos back then were basically 100% nylon with sides ranging from 4-6 inches. I have several of the older ones that I've never taken pictures of, but here are a few of the 100% nylon ones to give you an idea. I try to wear them a little lower than they were intended to be worn so they don't look so much like square cut trunks.

As Speedo moved on to lycra they did some interesting things like provide neon type "hot" colors like these two.
The camera flash really highlighted the neon" colors

These next three are examples of lycra speedos from the 80's that I like a lot.

Scott - you look outstanding in those speedos. Wow - very sexy. The striped ones are my favourite.

Keep 'em coming!

Thanks. I like them and the way they fit too. They are one of my favorites. The white part gets kind of see thru when wet. This is a similar one made by Dolfin, it is also 100% nylon, and is probably the oldest one that I have. The stripes are dark blue on this one and a little narrower.

Scott is correct and thanks to him for modelling some of the classics from the seventies. Actually, back in the sixties, everyone wore what we now call square cuts. Board shorts and jammers didn't exist yet. Speedos were cut slightly smaller and weren't as common.

However, there was another kind available as well, but not readily available in stores in the USA. I got my first pair from a French Canadian friend (a story I'll share sometime). I don't know what the fabric was made of, but they were cut considerably smaller than the ones Scott models so well. They were made of much softer fabric and were generally worn a bit looser. The sides were only about 3" and the rear just barely covered the butt crack. You could purchase them in Canada pretty easily, and they were available in some of the more trendy stores in NYC (the ones carrying European fashions).

Back in those days, I did quite a bit of waterskiing and loved to wear them for that. However, they were so loose that when you fell, they were either at your ankles or wedged up your butt (depending on whether or not you fell feet first or not).

They did look hot, though.....I'll scan and post photos if I can find any.

Hey thanks Scott for sharing your Speedo pics. They really show how the styles have changed. Those neon ones and the prints are amazing.
And didn't a lot more people wear them back then??
I have seen scans of magazine pics from a big aquatic center in Fort Lauderdale, Florida from the seventies. All the guys back then wore speedos. Not even that many square cuts. Way different now....

Justin,
Sure. Speedos were very common back then. All the high school and college swim teams wore them, although as I said, they had mostly 4-6 inch sides. They were relatively common at the beach and pools. There was a TV program in the U.S. back in the late 70's called "Battle of the Network Stars". It was pretty much what the name implies. The guys all wore speedos for the pool based competition. Some of the speedos would have been considered skimpy by today's standards, and most all of the guys wearing them looked really hot. Although I couldn't readily find pictures of the skimpier speedos, I did find these pictures. They're not best, but you'll get the idea.
