K - Thanks for the explanation. It still seems silly that non-prison society would adopt the long "shorts." But it's demonstrated clearly with NBA and college b-ball players, and has become mainstream. Here's an interesting blob of people talking about "real" shorts of guys.

OK, so I've heard conflicting stories about this. I read the story that K describes from one source in the UK. The other version of this was that in the US during the urban mayhem of the 1980s and 1990s, a lot of rappers would commit drug crimes or violent crimes and end up in prison. Since a belt could be used to do harm to one's self or others, no belts were allowed. Hence the sagging pants. It might be a geographical thing where they mean different things, since I always had associated the sagging pants more with aggressive masculinity and violence.

This is made worse by the fact that the ones who are doing it now are those suburban white kids with a beer gut but no butt. And a trucker's hat and some scraggly facial hair. Sufferers of "DGS" like Hank Hill. You can take a plumb bob to some of these kids. And they walk like crabs because their sacks are stuck to their legs from those boxer shorts.

Will our UK and US readers please illuminate me? Am I just becoming an old fart below the age of 30? Where you're from, does this mean "Taking it in the pooper" or "Dealing drugs and concealing a firearm"?

So I looked it up on Snopes. Here is one answer:

As we know, the Internet's always right.

OK, guys, here's another one I found when doing research for the "sagging" question. Let's see you guys get a hold of these:

I still believe in the theory of the "homosexuals being ready for sexual activity"

Being in the US and having a Federal prison in my town, we often have recent jailbirds released.

Now at first I was skeptical of this theory but while asking a local professor of human culture about it he shamedly (that a word? oh well) that it did indeed start as the openess for sexual activity.

However newcomers to the big jailhouse didn't know thats what it meant and so did it just to fit in. Once they were released the culture was spread through the ghetto and soon only "gangstas" and "bad asses" did. So naturally rappers started the act and it spread like wildfire after that.

So yes, it did spread from rappers but it originated from homosexual prisoners and clueless newcomers.

Weird erm?

P.S. I sag my pants but not 3 feet below my crotch, like 1 or 1/2 inch below my waist.

(However I can go lower if anyones interested :o  )

To tell you the truth, I wouldn't be surprised either way. Gay men start every other fashion trend, why not this?! At least, if this is the case, tight plaid pants and shorts are coming back into style. I only led that trend by about 16 years.

Well, now I'm really confused, but I'm not going to worry about it. All I know is that when I was a kid in the 60s and a teen in the 70s and a 20-something in the 80s, a 5-inch inseam was considered long and speedos were o.k. in "maintstream" society (though some people scoffed). But I have recently noticed the teen/20-something guys have started wearing 70s-type tight shirts with really short sleeves, and the "Brady Bunch" haircut seems to be coming back as well. Hopefully real shorts will follow suit. PL

I'm right there with you mate. Tight shirts are really coming back with alot of people, myself included 8) .

While speedo's are kind of there, I wish people would shut up and try them out instead of ridiculing people who wear them.

But until those days arrive I'll still dress the way I dress and wear what I want to 8).

K I myself at 21 wear the tighter shirts. I just think that they fit better and look great. I don't like the long over sized ones that just seems weird to me. As for the hair that was mentioned earlier, I am still a guy who loves short hair. Most men that I see can not pull off the longer hair and I know that a lot of teenagers are doing it but I just only ever see a couple that make it look good. Thats my opinion on the matter. As for the speedos I have not found one person that didn't like me in them. Even the red ones that I just bought, they look great I think.
If only I had a BF to share them with.

And I'm 20 and do the same as you mate.

Same thing about the short hair, I've always had it and will always have it. Short hair looks so much better!

Well people like me in mine but there are alot of ignorant guys out there, it pisses me off.

Just post a pic of them, you won't have any shortage of offers

I haven't cared for the long hair look in a long time. But the "Brady Bunch" haircut was normal in the 70s when real shorts were also considered normal. I'd like for the the real shorts and acceptance of speedos come back, but leave the Brady Bunch hairdoos behind. Seems to be the opposite so far. We'll see.

It's a sad reality that at least in the U.S.:

Short and Tight = feminine or gay

Long and loose/sloppy = masculine

Hit the head on the nail mate.

Whats so masculine about being loose/sloppy??
I think masculinity is reflected by a sharp, tight looking guy who knows how to carry himself, not this loose crap I see everyday.

Just bumping this one. This past Sunday I finally had time and it was warm so I took the new bike for a spin. Only got 4 miles because the trail was washed out and blocked. However I wore short shorts, well 2 inch above the knee. They were light weight and great!

Howdy, ok since I can say I remeber when speedos where hot and the shorts to wear where alot shorter and tighter and then the long board shorts they wear now, I would say its cause of all the sexual taboos and hiding your stuff and at lest it seems like so many men are not comfy with their penis no matter the size.kc

I agree here with the comfortable part about penis. I think that many men are not comfortable or here stories of huge ones and think theirs will be too small. I was shy about showing mine until I was like 16 because I thought it was small. Well then I realized unless it is hard it will be small at least at that age. Now seeing how many guys are smaller than my 7 I feel pretty damn comfortable and not afraid to show it. Shorter and tighter I say (shorts)!

I can see then why they would wear loose shorts. But you should still always be happy with your penis size, most guys/girls will go after the way you use it rather than how big it is.

I may also add that a large, fat belly will make any penis look small. But even among good-looking guys, there seems to be a taboo against open male sexuality these days. Pretty funny considering all of the fat chicks with "Pink" on their shorts.
